EPA awards $1 million to Mountain Turtle Tribe to clean up San Haven spa

DUNSEITH, ND (KMOT) – $1 million is going to the Turtle Mountain Tribe to help clean up the abandoned Sun Haven Sanctuary in Dunseith.

The money is part of a series of Brownsfield grants and awards to North Dakota communities announced by the EPA on Thursday.

The site served as a sanatorium and state hospital throughout the 20th century, but has been abandoned for several years.

The structure contains hazardous chemicals and has been destroyed over time.

“We are grateful for an EPA Brownfields grant to address the main hospital building at the former San Haven Sanitarium. San Haven is one of our most significant safety and environmental hazards. We look forward to cleaning up this troubled property and redeveloping it as a heritage park in the near future.” let’s use it,” said Sangpushtan chairman Jamie Azur.

Three communities in McKenzie County, including Fargo, also received Brownsfield grants for cleanup projects.
