HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hokule’a is a wonder to behold.
Vance Kaleohano Kahahawai Farrant, 24, has been sailing with the Polynesian Sailing Society for three years and has to pinch himself when he gets on board.
“This is our ‘Kawainui’ management unit, named after Herb Kawainui Kane, one of the founders of Hokule’a,” Farrant said during a recent visit.
The Hokule’a crew is preparing for a four-year voyage around the Pacific Ocean, which will begin in June from Alaska.
Farrant clearly enjoys sharing Hokule’a’s story.
The seed may have been planted when he was a Kamehameha fifth-grader more than a decade ago, and now captain of Hokule’a Lehua Kalama toured.
“We will impact the lives of others. We look forward to the younger navigators and sailors who come after us and how we honor that,” he said.
