JACKSON, Mississippi (WMC) – Members of the Mississippi Senate are considering a bill that would provide financial incentives for volunteer firefighters.
The bill, called House Bill 5-21, would establish a service reward program as a financial incentive for anyone who volunteers with a Mississippi Fire Department.
Lawmakers say the incentives will work on a loophole system. It will reward participation in tasks such as training courses and exercises.
These points can be redeemed for annual incentive payments of $500.
For example, after 20 years of service, firefighters receive a lump sum of $10,000.
