Several law enforcement agencies continue to search for the suspect, one of whom has been arrested

Decatur, Ala. (WAFF) – The Decatur Police Department, Hartselle Police Department and Morgan County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a suspect who fled into the river.

According to Decatur police, officers were called to reports of a robbery near Casa Santiago, located at 2812 Spring Ave., SW. Officers obtained a description of the vehicle and suspects. When they found the vehicle, they tried to stop them, but they fled and the chase ended on Hwy. 31 S.

During the chase, the driver lost control, crossed the median and ran into Flint Creek near Bowels Bridge Rd.

The vehicle was flooded and the suspects got out. One of the suspects swam from the river to the shore and was arrested. The second suspect was last seen struggling to stay downstream.

Officials say officers tried to get to the second suspect but were unable to because the person fell. The Morgan County Rescue Squad and Decatur Police are currently searching for the person and ALEA is investigating the crash.

The Hartselle Police Department posted on Facebook at 1:21 p.m. that the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 31 near the Decatur/Hartssell city limits were being backed up as they searched for the suspect.

Residents are urged to avoid the area while law enforcement searches for the suspect, according to a Facebook post from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
