Inexpensive adaptive equipment is available for the disabled

MINOT, ND (KMOT) – This month is Disability Awareness Month and one of the many events hosted by the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities is teaching inexpensive equipment hacks for people with mental or physical disabilities.

The cost of adaptive medical equipment can be expensive. Wheelchairs cost between $5,000 and $15,000.

Kyle Erickson, a research associate at the center, said that adaptive devices for some tasks should not be expensive, and they are collected by people with mental and physical disabilities and their direct support professionals.

“There’s a lot of Velcro, a lot of cups with high edges, so someone who uses one hand isn’t chasing their food when they’re eating,” Erickson said.

Erickson said some of the items were purchased at a local dollar store.
