HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Officials say a Wailuku doctor has been arrested for prescribing drugs for an undercover federal agent.
The Justice Department says Dr. Chris Boulange, 74, prescribed Xanax, Hydrocodone and Valium during meetings at restaurants and bars.
According to the affidavit, in June 2022, an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent asked to meet with Boulange, posing as a new patient seeking an opioid prescription.
United States Attorney Claire E. “Licensed physicians are able to prescribe potentially dangerous prescription drugs that are illegal to possess,” Connors said. “Criminal abuse of the privilege to prescribe such medications may result in criminal prosecution.”
Between July 2022 and November 2022, the undercover agent met with Boulange four times, each time at a restaurant or bar, not at a medical office.
The complaint alleges that each prescription was issued outside the normal scope of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose.
The March 2 indictment includes four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine of up to $1,000,000.
