HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A commemorative quarter featuring Hawaii’s beloved emblem has been released.
The quarter features Edith Kanaka’ole – a cultural leader, composer and kumuhula performer.
The coin features a portrait of Kanakaole with hair and a lei po’o (or head lei) that transforms into elements of the Hawaiian landscape – a symbol of his dedication to the preservation of Hawaiian land and culture.
At the bottom of the coin is written: “E ho mai ka ‘ike”, which means “giving wisdom”.
Her design is one of five included in the American Women’s Quarterly Program for 2023. Other women featured this year include Bessie Coleman, Jovita Idar, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Maria Tallchief.
The 2024 US Quarterly will also feature Hawaii Congresswoman Patsy Mink.
