IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – A vehicle is overturned in a ditch on Clark Road north of Willoughby Road.
The California Dispatch Center (CHP) El Centro received the call on Sunday, March 26 around 4:46 p.m. and investigated the accident.
According to the CHP, a 33-year-old man was driving a 2016 Honda Accord south on Clark Road just north of Willoughby Road.
For unknown reasons, the man disobeyed road closure signs, crashed into a concrete barrier and then overturned into a canal.
The driver died of his injuries at the scene.
According to the CHP, the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The driver’s family claims the signs are too close to the canal and don’t give people enough time to react.
“It’s about 40 feet. I think if this sign doesn’t go all the way up so people can see it, it could cause other problems in the future,” said Antonio Chavez, the victim’s father.
The accident is under investigation.
