The Decatur Library is hosting a Valentine-themed reading

NEWTON COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) – Ahead of Valentine’s Day, a Newton library is getting into the holiday spirit in the form of literacy. Children of all ages came to the Jessie Mae Everett Public Library in Decatur on Monday.

The library hosted a Valentine’s Day reading of the Love Monster book, followed by time to make love monster crafts and eat snacks.

Newton Elementary School student Grace Smith said events like this encourage children to read, and she says reading improves learning.

“I love reading and I think reading really affects education. When you grow up, you can learn a lot from books, like geography books, science books. It really helps your character,” Smith said.

“We want to attract children here and remind everyone that the library is here. Plus, it’s just fun and they check out the books afterward,” said Library Manager Melody Massey.

Massey said she likes to host themed readings throughout the year.
