Police say the man suspected in a fiery DUI crash on the Las Vegas Strip fell asleep at the wheel

Las Vegas, Nev. (FOX5) – A man accused of drunken driving that caused a fatal crash and dramatic footage has a court date for the next day.

Alexander Dawkins, 34, faces charges of DUI – first, failure to maintain lanes/improper lane change and no proof of insurance. He has since been granted bail and ordered to stay out of trouble.

At approximately 4:37 p.m., the driver, later identified as Dawkins, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a palm tree, according to a Las Vegas Police Department report.

“The driver then appeared to push the gas on the car, the engine revving and the wheels spinning,” the report said. “The car then caught fire.”

When officers arrived on the scene, they broke the window of the car and got Dawkins out. While speaking with paramedics, Dawkins identified himself but could not recall being involved in the collision. He said he remembered driving down Las Vegas Boulevard.

“I looked at Iskandar’s eyes and they were watery and dry, but normal in color,” the report said.

Dawkins refused to take the standard field test and wanted to speak with his attorney first.

Dawkins’ next hearing is scheduled for April 24.
