Nationwide rallies against Bill 1080 are planned

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit organizations, partner organizations and allies will march in South Dakota cities Saturday morning to protest the legislation.

Statewide marches are taking place to protest House Bill 1080, legislation that would ban certain types of care for transgender minors.

The Senate Health and Human Services passed the bill by a vote of 4 to 2, with 1 excused for a vote in the House.

“This is one of the most extreme political attacks on transgender people in recent memory,” said Susan Williams, executive director of the Project Transformation Advocacy Network. “Not only does it deny medically necessary, life-saving care to transgender youth, it also prevents parents from getting the medical care their children need — care that the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and other leading medical authorities have said. it is important for some young people.

The organizations are calling on the Senate to kill the bill, saying parents of a transgender youth should be able to decide with doctors what medical care their child needs.

Walks are organized by the Project Transformation Advocacy Network, Sioux Falls Pride, Black Hills Equality Center, SD Youth Action, Brookings Pride, Brookings PFLAG, Quilting Allies, Equality South Dakota, as well as other organizations across the state.
