WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui Police say one person has serious and life-threatening injuries following a crash between a car and a moped in Wailuku Friday night.
Officials say the incident happened at Waihu Beach Highway and Eha Street around 11 p.m.
An early police investigation indicates a silver 2020 Honda sedan was traveling westbound on Waiehu Beach Road, made a left turn onto Eha Street and collided with a 2016 YN-50 moped traveling eastbound on Waiehu Beach Road.
Officials say that the driver of the moped, a 53-year-old man from Waihu, fell on the highway and suffered serious injuries that are life-threatening.
The driver of the sedan, a 19-year-old Lahaina man, stopped immediately after the collision and remained at the scene to administer first aid, authorities said.
Maui Police say the driver of the moped was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say the driver of the Honda sedan was later arrested for first-degree negligent injury, driving while intoxicated, prohibition to engage minors, consumption or possession of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle, and later released pending investigation. .
The police investigation revealed that the involvement of alcohol is suspected in this collision.
Police say the speed and drugs involved have not been determined as the investigation continues.
Officials also say that the driver of the moped was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
And the airbag of the sedan did not open.
According to officials, it is not known whether the operator of the sedan was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
