Las Vegas, Nev. (FOX5) – The suspect in a fatal Las Vegas Strip fire crash Friday night is now facing DUI charges, according to court and police records.
Alexander Jay Dawkins, 34, faces DUI, failure to maintain lane and failure to pay insurance, according to court records.
Dawkins and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer were hospitalized after the crash, which happened around 4:30 p.m. on the Strip on Jan. 27. Police told FOX5 the driver of a white sedan was traveling southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard when he crashed into a palm tree. central mediation. According to the police, the car caught fire with the driver inside.
Police said the driver and the officer were taken to the hospital; the officer was treated for smoke inhalation after breaking the window and freeing the driver from the vehicle.
An LVMPD spokesman said Monday that the officer is doing well and is scheduled to return to work on his next shift.
