Justin Pearson is running for the District 86 seat as the successor to the late Rep. Barbara Cooper

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Justin J. Pearson won the 86th state House seat after the death of Rep. Barbara Cooper, who died just days before the 2022 midterm elections.

In the election held on Tuesday, Pearson won by 716 votes. Candidate Julian T. Bolton trailed with 192.

District 86 covers Millington, Fraser, parts of downtown Memphis, South Memphis and Westwood. There are 45,000 voters in this constituency.

The 28-year-old Memphian is the newest state House representative in the area in 26 years.
