Marty Jackley announces jobs, retains a number of current AG employees

PIERRE, SD – Attorney General-elect Marty Jackley announced Tuesday who he will bring to the office in January.

Jackley retains a number of members who currently serve in the Attorney General’s office. Chief among them are Dan Satterly and Chad Moteller. Satterlee will be the director of the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Mosteller will be the assistant director. Currently, Mosteller serves as DCI’s interim director. Brent Kempema will also remain in the office and serve as Deputy Attorney General for the Criminal Division.

“This is a group of professionals that I have worked with in the past and that I believe can solve the challenges we face,” Jackley said. “These are the kind of dedicated leaders who belong in the Attorney General’s Office because of their experience and dedication to public service.”

In addition, Jackley will retain Charlie McGuigan, who has served in the office since 1991, as Deputy Attorney General.

Former Attorney General Mark Barnett is returning to the office as Deputy Prime Minister. Barnett, 68, began working as an assistant attorney general 42 years ago and served three terms as South Dakota’s attorney general from 1991 to 2003. He also served as a District Court judge for 12 years.

“This office and the people in this office have always been special to me,” Barnett said. “I am honored to be asked by the Attorney General to join him as he takes office.”

Rounding out the staff, Tiffany Stozer will serve as DCI Assistant Director and Sarah Thorne will serve as Deputy Attorney General in the Appellate Division, which handles all state criminal appeals.

Jackley will be sworn in Jan. 7 as South Dakota’s 33rd attorney general. He previously served as the US Attorney for South Dakota from 2006 to 2009 and the Attorney General of South Dakota from 2009 to 2019. He was elected last November.

“I look forward to serving with such a dedicated group and working with local law enforcement to make our communities even safer,” Jackley said. “I also want to thank current Attorney General Mark Vargo for his work over the past several months and his assistance in this transition.”
