A new viewing area for lava viewers has been created amid concerns about congestion and safety

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A safe public viewing area along Old Saddle Road opened Thursday to accommodate the growing crowds to see Mauna Loa’s fiery display.

Officials hope the viewing area will address growing concerns about congestion on Daniel K. Highway.

County officials have put in place traffic mitigation efforts to let people know where to go.

Security directs people to a designated viewing area and they ask everyone to park on the right side of the road. The left side will be open for emergency vehicles.

Officials are asking spectators to stay no longer than 90 minutes and stay close to their vehicles.
