Trump: Ron DeSantis forced my supporters

(NewsNation) – Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his endorsement has won the seat of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. But he said DeSantis, now seen as Trump’s main rival for the GOP presidential nomination, could have been kinder.

“He won’t even be able to be a factor in the race,” Trump said, referring to the GOP gubernatorial primary. “And as soon as possible as I supported him, in a few moments the race is over,” Trump said. “I got him the nomination. He didn’t understand. I got it, because as soon as I gave that support, he got it.”

DeSantis defeated Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam with more than 56% of the vote.

“Then he ran and he shouldn’t have been able to win,” Trump said, referring to the governor’s race against Democrat Andrew Gillum. “I did two rallies, we had 52,000 people each and he won. I thought he could have been nicer. But that’s up to him.”

DeSantis defeated Gillum by less than approximately 33,000 votes to win the race for governor of Florida.

NewsNation reached out to DeSantis and his team for a response.

Trump said DeSantis was someone he always had a “decent relationship” with. But now it’s DeSantis and Trump they often butt heads ahead of a possible matchup for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Both have also indicated an interest in running for president in 2024. The two politicians have not attended each other’s rallies recently, and Trump recently called DeSantis “DeSanctimonious” at a campaign event.

A a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll released last month found that DeSantis was ahead of Trump when GOP voters were asked who they believed would lead the party into the future.

Trump also discussed his endorsements ahead of the midterms, saying that even if a candidate does well, he doesn’t think his endorsement will be respected.

“Well, I think if they win, I should get all the credit,” Trump said. “If they lose, nothing should be blamed on me, but it will probably be the opposite.

“When they win, I think they will do very well, I will probably be given very little credit, even though in many cases I tell people to run, they ran and they turned out to be very good candidates. They turned out to be very good candidates,” Trump said.

“But usually what would happen is that when they do well, I don’t get any credit. And if they do bad, it’s all going to be blamed on me. So I’m ready for anything, but we’re going to defend ourselves.” ”

The exclusive interview comes after Trump teased a “big announcement” coming next week, after the final election.

“On Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, I’m going to make a very big announcement,” the former president said Monday night at a rally in Dayton, Ohio.

Republican momentum has grown in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections. The GOP is now favored to take control of both houses of Congress from the Democrats, according to Decision Desk headquarters.

At the end of July Poll by NewsNation Decision Desk HQnearly 57% of respondents said Trump should not run in 2024. They were then asked which candidate they would prefer, but in a field that included DeSantis, “Someone else” received the most votes with 38%.

In the same survey, registered voters also rejected Biden’s bid for a second term. Sixty percent of people said he should not run again. Like the Republicans, no alternative Democrat received a majority of support, with “someone else” receiving 44% of the vote.
