BISMARCK, ND (KFYR) – For many sports, physical skills can be improved, but when it comes to shooting, it’s a little different.
Unlike sports like football, basketball, etc., shooting is all about the mental game. Tom Thompson, a coach at the Bismarck-Mandan Rifle and Pistol Association, says shooting is only 10 percent mental — the real talent comes from drive, determination and focus.
“It’s great because anyone can play this game, you just have to think and concentrate a lot. It’s really a good gender-neutral game, most boys and girls fight at the same time and in the same fire,” he says. Thompson.
According to Thompson, those who succeed have the mental strength to make them great. Many of his students have received high marks and accolades over the 33 years he has coached in the junior program.
Of all the shooters in North Dakota, only about one will qualify for the Junior Olympics.
