MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – The Meridian Fire Department said smoke is the leading cause of fire deaths, and even a small fire can fill your home in less than 10 minutes, so it’s important to have a working smoke detector on every floor of your home.
James Hollingsworth, Deputy Chief of the Meridian Police Department, wants to remind people that summer is over to check your smoke alarms.
“Your smoke detector batteries should be replaced twice a year. We use the summer time to replace our batteries. November 6th is when summer fun ends, and it’s a good time to forget to change the batteries in your smoke detector,” Hollingsworth said.
If you live within the city of Meridian and you do not have a smoke alarm, the Meridian Fire Department has a program where they can come to your home and install a smoke detector for free.
To schedule an appointment with the department, you are asked to call the fire department at 601-485-1822.
