(NEXSTAR) – If you’ve been patiently waiting for Monday night’s Powerball drawing, you’ll have to wait a little longer.
A technical glitch caused a delay in Monday’s drawing, a gaming spokesman said during the scheduled drawing at 10:59 p.m. ET.
Additional details are not yet available.
According to California LotteryMonday’s drawing was delayed “due to the participating lottery requiring additional time to complete necessary security protocols.”
“Powerball has strict security requirements that must be met by all 48 lotteries before a drawing can occur,” the California Lottery wrote Twitter. “Once the necessary security protocols are complete, the drawing will be conducted under the supervision of Lottery Security Officers and independent auditors.”
Colorado Lottery tweeted similar message.
Powerball’s Web page notes that results are pending. The results will be announced at the game Web page and Powerball’s YouTube channel when the numbers are drawn.
It is not clear how long it will take to resolve the issue.
A similar problem delayed the Powerball drawing just a few weeks ago, according to Nexstar’s WEHT.
In April, the Powerball drawing was delayed for more than four hours for a similar reason. Nexstar’s WJW reports that, in that drawing, Powerball stated that the participating lottery needed additional time to complete security protocols.
Last summer, the Powerball drawing was delayed to allow several lotteries additional time to complete security protocols, Nexstar’s WCBD reports.
Monday’s drawing was supposed to be historic – after more than three dozen draws without a winner, the Powerball jackpot reached $1.9 billion. It is not only the largest Powerball jackpot but also the largest lottery prize in US history.
A Powerball jackpot winner can receive their prize as an annuity with 30 installment payments over 29 years or as a lump sum. The current jackpot has a cash value of $929.1 million. Maybe you want to think twice before taking the cash option however.
Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as in Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The drawing takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 PM ET.
This is a developing story.
