EMS: Possible arc flash at HECO substation seriously injures 2 men

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – EMS officials treated two men Sunday morning after a possible electrical arc​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​at a HECO substation.

This incident happened around 9:10 in the area of ​​Kuvili street substation.

EMS said two men, ages 55 and 27, suffered burns to their torsos and limbs as a result of the incident. Both of them are in serious condition.

In a statement, HECO spokesman Alan Yonan said, “Employees were working at the Iviley substation when a piece of electrical equipment experienced an arc flash – a high-voltage electrical discharge. We are working to determine the cause. Safety is our priority, from so when one of our people gets hurt, it affects everyone in the company. We all hope they make a full recovery.”

This is the second incident in the last month in which HECO employees were injured. On October 11, three workers were injured by shaking while working on an underground power line.
