HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A hiker is in critical condition after falling from the Olomana Trail in Windward Oahu Sunday evening.
The Honolulu Fire Department said the group was hiking between the second and third peaks when a man fell 150 feet from the trail.
HFD said they received a call just after 4:40 p.m. and set up a landing zone at a park in the neighborhood of Maunawili.
The rescue team was able to find the injured hiker and move him and other hikers to safety.
Care was then transferred to Honolulu EMS, who used advanced life-saving measures to treat the man and transport him to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Two other travelers with him were not injured, officials said.
“It’s a very dangerous trail to hike on, and even more unfortunately, this hiker actually fell and slid about 150 feet,” said HFD Battalion Chief Carlton Yamada.
At the moment, there is no word on why this man fell.
The fire department is reminding people to assess hikers’ level of difficulty and know the route before traveling, stressing that people should not rely solely on social media for trail information.
