Travis ScottAt the Astroworld 2021 festival, nine attendees were killed and more injured after a crowd rushed the stage.
While the 29-year-old “Sicko Mode” rapper was performing in Houston, Texas on Friday, November 5th, the crowd surged forward and caused a mass accident.
“It’s a tragic night,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña he said during press conference early on Saturday, November 6. “We know we’ve had at least 8 confirmed deaths tonight and we’ve had dozens of people injured here in this event.”
Peña noted that nearly 50,000 individuals attended the music festival, explaining that around 9:00 p.m., the crowd “started to press toward the front of the stage,” causing panic and injuries.
“At the beginning of the mass casualty incident, when it was launched… We transferred 17 patients to the hospital,” Peña added at the time. “We won’t know the cause of death for the eight that have been confirmed until the medical examiner completes the investigation, but we are in the process — the Houston Police Department — sending units to hospitals to identify these patients.”
The incident happened at a sold-out outdoor festival held at NRG Park.
The crowd was “from panic as people ran for safety,” said a source close to the investigation Us Weekly. “The quick response of Astroworld security and staff on site undoubtedly saved even more people from injury or worse.”
During the show, Scott paused his performance “three times” to ask what happened, according to one source.
“He asked everyone in the area to go help them and bring them to the front,” the insider said Us. “As soon as they found out what was going on, they stopped the show in the interest of public safety.”
The official event page has been shared on social media statement support early Saturday, writing: “Our hearts go out to the Astroworld Festival family tonight – especially those we’ve lost and their loved ones. We are focused on supporting local officials as much as we can.”
In the announcement, it was confirmed that the Saturday line-up of the festival was cancelled.
“As authorities mentioned in their press conference earlier, they are investigating a series of cardiac arrests that have occurred,” the social media statement read. “Thank you to our partners at the Houston Police Department, Fire Department and NRG Park for their response and support.”
Scott’s partner, Kylie Jenner, she shared footage from the concert a few hours earlier via Instagram Story, after attending with her sister Kendall Jenner. The 24-year-old founder of Kylie Cosmetics released trailer footage featuring three-year-old daughter Stormi’s name, along with concert footage during the rapper’s set. Jenner’s Instagram videos showed the packed crowd jumping during her beau’s performance, which was complete with pyrotechnics on stage.
The annual festival of musicians concluded the weekly program “Astroweek”, which he described over Instagram October as “wild week”.
“But injecting the city with inspiring features and charitable activities is essential,” Scott wrote at the time. “Join us throughout the week for the crowd 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 it also reveals the product. I bring those I build with to the city and thank them for stepping into this vision and going hammmmmm.”
