PIERRE, SD (Dakota News Now) – Governor Noem has announced that flags will be at half-staff throughout the state from sunrise to sunset, effective immediately in honor of former Governor Harvey Vollman. Flags will remain at half-staff until the day of Governor Vollman’s funeral, to be announced at a later date.
“Harvey Vollman stepped up and answered the call of duty and stepped into the position of governor at a difficult time for our state,” Noem said. “During the short term of his governorship, he promoted the development of water in our country and helped abolish the tax on personal property of the state. In South Dakota, we respect our leaders. We appreciate their achievements. We value our history.”
Vollman ran for lieutenant governor in 1974 with Governor Richard Knipe on the ticket. When Governor Knipe resigned in 1978 to become the United States Ambassador to Singapore, Vollman took over as governor of South Dakota. Before working in the executive branch, Vollman served in the state Senate from 1969-1975, including as the Democratic leader from 1971-1974.
Funeral details will be announced at a later date.
