MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A mother who shot and killed her 3-year-old son with an AR-15 safety rifle was granted $75,000 bail Thursday.
Tinesha Jackson, 25, was charged with criminally negligent homicide and aggravated child abuse on Aug. 10, records show.
The incident happened on Sunday, March 27.
After calling police, Jackson took her son to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, where he later died, according to an affidavit.
It was later revealed that the child and his 4-year-old brother were in the care of his uncle while Jackson was out to eat with a friend.
While his uncle slept on the couch, the son and his 4-year-old brother were in Jackson’s bedroom, where they discovered an AR-15 rifle in a storage box at the foot of the bed.
The uncle heard the gunshot and found the boy on the bedroom floor.
While in custody, the gun owner, Tedrick Butler, 25, admitted to placing the AR-15 in Jackson’s bedroom. He also admitted to removing the weapons from the bedroom prior to the search.
Butler was also charged Aug. 10 with felony murder, aggravated child abuse, tampering with/submitting evidence, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm with intent to commit a felony.
Butler’s bond has been set at $200,000.
Jackson and Butler are scheduled to appear in court on November 16.
The Memphis Police Department offers free gun lockers at all precincts.
