Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was carted off the field during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind., with an apparent right knee injury.
Tagovailoa went down in apparent pain when an Indiana defender landed on his knee while completing a throw to Jacob Copeland.
Freshman Billy Edwards Jr., a transfer from Wake Forest, stepped in for Tagovailoa with about 12 minutes left in the game and Maryland trailing 27-24 and capped a drive that ended with Roman Hemby’s 6-yard run for a 31-27 lead.
Tagovailoa is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. In his third year at Maryland, Tagovailoa entered the week second in the Big Ten with 1,731 passing yards and third in the nation with a 74.1 percent completion rate.
He was 25 of 39 for 270 yards and two touchdown passes along with a 3-yard scoring run at the time of his release.
