“At first we were very friendly and civil and that’s why people were confused about some of the events that happened, but going through the divorce process added even more stress and it’s hard on both of us,” Ruhl said during an emotional Instagram Story video in October in 2022

The Illinois native added at the time, “When we decided to split up, it was a mutual decision, like, we talked about it [and it] it wasn’t just a matter of urgency, although it seems that way. We tried really hard, and again we were like, ‘You know what? I think it’s in our best interests and I have to get out of what-if mode because hindsight is 20/20.’ It is hard.”

Ruhl and Thompson were one of two couples to say “I Do” at the end of the second season of the Netflix series — side by side Iyanna McNeely and Jarrett Jones, who have also since split up. Shortly after celebrating their first wedding anniversary, Us Weekly confirmed in August 2022 that the marketing assistant had filed for divorce.

“It really just came down to differences in personality compatibility,” Ruhl explained during her social media video that October, noting that neither she nor her ex-spouse were cheating on the other. “I think that’s what makes it even harder because you live in this, at least for me, I kind of live in this state of denial where it’s like, ‘But we love each other.’ You can still love each other and do your best to move on. It’s hard, it’s very hard.”

The “Conversations with Nick Thompson” podcast host is equally emotional about navigating his new normal after their breakup.

“The last few weeks have been particularly challenging for me,” he wrote in part via Instagram in September 2022. “Like many of us who go through a loss or life-changing event, we experience cycles of grief as we manage our emotions. Everyone perceives and experiences grief differently when a relationship ends, let alone the loss of a marriage in the public eye.”

While Ruhl and Thompson were focused on progress, their Love is blind partners saw how difficult their divorce process was.

“[Danielle and Iyanna are] it works very, very well,” Natalie Lee — who was briefly engaged Shayne Jansen during Season 2 — exclusively Us in September 2022, also referring to McNeely and Jones’ split that August. “I think they really had a real love for each other, like in those relationships, so I know those decisions that they had to make were very, very difficult and we felt that as their friends. I think, you know, as friends we hope it works out, but we totally respect and understand why it didn’t.”
