He got 5 years in prison for driving in a rush hour in Carlsbad — twice – GNT NEWS

A 20-year-old Washington state man who drove his vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians at a Carlsbad mall earlier this year was sentenced Thursday to five years in state prison.

John Martinez-Gutierrez, of Spokane, pleaded guilty to attempted murder last month for hitting multiple people with his vehicle shortly after 2 a.m. May 15 at the Village Faire shopping center on Carlsbad Village Drive.

Carlsbad police said Martinez-Gutierrez got into a fight with several people in the mall parking lot and then drove his vehicle into the crowd, hitting several of them. After a short drive, he reversed the vehicle into a group of people, hitting several more people, and then fled.

In the attack, four people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police.

Martinez-Gutierrez was arrested two days later at a motel in Escondido.
