Return to the City of Love? Season 2 of Emily in Paris seen by Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) continues to adjust to her new life abroad — and fans have been happy to join her on the bumpy journey.
From her personal life to her professional life, Emily quickly found herself overwhelmed by the options Paris had to offer. The second chapter of the Netflix hit presented its own set of challenges that left the marketing director more confused about her future than ever. After finally finding a place for herself abroad, Emily ends up torn between staying in Paris or returning to Chicago.
Viewers were left with nothing to do by the end of the last episode – and even Collins doesn’t know for sure what her character will do next.
“I’m dying to know what the decision is, because I don’t know. I’m as confused as Emily,” said the actress Ella before Season 2 dropped in December 2021, noting that she couldn’t get a good read on Emily’s next steps. “I think each has advantages and disadvantages. I think Emily was blown away by that [her boss] Sylvie would like to come with her. And then at the same time she found this relationship with Alfie and maybe she’d like to go to London. It’s just a Eurostar train ride away. So I don’t know.”
The UK native may have no idea what’s in store for her character, but she remains hopeful about whatever happens, adding: “I think it would be fun to have both of those elements at the same time. Is there a world where both could exist? You do not know. I think anything is possible in Emily’s world.”
Emily’s complicated love life also plays a role in her difficult decision. At the end of the second season, she leaves without seeing a future with Gabriel either (Lucas Well done) or Alfie (Lucien Laviscount).
“This decision comes from the reason: ‘OK, I have to put this behind me. And what will my future look like? My future can’t include this anymore because I’ve literally just been shown that something else is going on and I can’t fight it anymore and I have to let it go,’ Collins said Ella. “And she’s crying on the bridge and she’s coming to this point where she’s going to make a powerful decision.”
Show creator, Darren Starrhe explained that Emily’s future remains uncertain, which is telling TV line December 2021, “She has reasons to choose a number of doors at the end of season two, and our challenge is to decide which of those doors she chooses and why. That’s what season 3 is going to be about.”
He added: “When you live in a foreign country, one of the questions is where is your heart? Is it where you came from or where you are now? Emily will fight with that.”
