HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – For cancer survivors, every day is a gift.
A salon owner in Waipio shares her gift with others living with debilitating illnesses.
Faith and family drive Glory McCaleb to embrace every opportunity and challenge.
“The doctor told me, ‘You’re lucky if you live 10 years,'” McCaleb said.
In October 2012, McCaleb’s life was turned upside down.
“It’s been 10 years since I’ve been saved. I was diagnosed with polymyositis. It is an autoimmune disease and can be managed but not cured. The doctor previously told me that I will be happy if I live for 10 years, so this 10th anniversary is a big celebration for me,” he said.
He celebrates every year with a charity event – Cut for a Cure – to raise money for local patients and the American Cancer Society. Her salon, Hair Creations by Glorey, is offering a $57 haircut and make-up next Saturday, October 22.
This year, she’s also giving away free haircuts and hairstyles for cancer survivors.
And if you are losing your hair, don’t worry.
“If patients need a wig, I’m happy to give them a wig and style it however they want,” she said.
McCaleb was there — half his hair was gone.
She says every day is still a struggle. Her disease causes weakness, fatigue and muscle swelling that makes it painful to move.
He undergoes chemotherapy and takes medication every Saturday.
She says cutting hair and being with her clients is a form of therapy.
“My husband, my family, my BFFs are what motivate me to stay strong. Do it for my kids,” McCaleb said. “A lot of people have asked me, ‘How do you do it? How do you manage two companies, as a full-time mom, as a full-time wife, I’m sure if you think positive all the time, you know that if you think positive, what’s going on in your mind. If you have a purpose in life, if you have hope, and always pray. He always finds a way, you know he always does.”
The salon is located at 94-1144 Ka Uka Blvd Suite #3. Cancer survivors who cannot make it on October 22 can schedule a free service for another day. Call to make an appointment (808) 691-9747 or visit haircreationsbyglorey.com.
