After the proposal, celebrity couples often have an important question for each other: should they sign a prenuptial agreement?
“We have a prenuptial agreement, they are prenuptial… do you know what day and year this is? Everyone needs a prenuptial agreement!” Khloe Kardashian said Eh! News in June 2011, referring to her then-husband Lamar Odom. “I mean, I don’t care if you make $5 million or $5 million, these days… people are crazy, you never know. And when you have businesses in common, like we do, you have to protect yourself. That doesn’t mean you don’t love them.”
A prenuptial agreement – or prenuptial agreement – is a contract that a couple draws up before they get married, usually listing their assets and specifying how everything will be divided in the event of a divorce. However, they may also include specific mandates, such as a “no cheating” clause. Teresa Giudice had a prenup with her ex-husband Joe Giudice.
“A week before we got married, Joe asked me to sign a prenuptial agreement and I felt like when you love someone, you don’t do that,” she revealed in the January 2020 episode. The Real Housewives of New Jersey. “I didn’t even read it. I just said, ‘I want you to put one thing in there. If you ever cheat, the prenuptial agreement is void.’”
Some celebrity couples, however, forego prenup when they decide to tie the knot. “I wish I had signed a prenuptial agreement [when I married Nick Lachey],” Jessica Simpson admitted during an appearance in February 2020 The Oz Show. “The funny thing is that Nick wanted me to sign a prenuptial agreement and I was so offended. I was like, ‘But we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives!'”
Occasionally, the couple’s whirlwind romance gets in the way of their ability to work things out in advance. When justin bieber and Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) secretly married in a courthouse ceremony in September 2018, a source said Us Weekly that they turned to lawyers regarding the drafting of a prenuptial agreement, but there was not enough time to arrange everything.
“He was someone I always cared so deeply about and loved so much,” Haley said Ella on February 2020 about his engagement to the “Yummy” singer just a month after they got back together in June 2018. “He’s an amazing, amazing man and such a good life partner. There is no one I would ever want to spend my life with but him. So I’m lucky.”
