Fire and Rescue Services Tax Coming to Vote on Putnam County Voters

Putnam County, Virginia (WSAZ) – In November, Putnam County voters will have the opportunity to vote on a special tax that would affect the fire and rescue services.

If passed, it would help pay for salaries, expenses, operating costs and hire more firefighters, as well as fleet replacement and maintenance.

said Richard Boleyn, a fire official for the Putnam County Fire Service Council. “And also start putting some county-paid firefighters on the Putnam County system.”

Everyone who owns a property in Putnam County currently pays a shooting fee based on the square footage of their home.

Bolin said that if the special tax was passed, it would change how much residents pay β€” based on the appraised value of their home or business.

β€œWe will actually have residents and businesses that will save money, and we will have some that will break even, and then there will be others that will see an increase,” Paulin said.

It’s critical that the tax be passed, said John Smoot, the Teays Valley Fire Chief.

One of the first things he wants to happen if this is done is to increase the salaries of the firefighters.

“If the volunteers don’t improve, and it doesn’t really seem to improve, you’ll see longer response times,” Smoot said. “It’s very good to see a decrease in the number of fire stations.”

The new cost, Bolin said, is to charge more favorable fees to people and companies who own higher value properties.

β€œOur calculations put us around 175,000 you will start to see an increase,” he said.
